Public Realm is that part of the city to which the public in general has access, such as streets, lanes, roads, squares, bridges and parks. It is also the main space for movement, circulation and the place citizens meet and interact – voluntarily or involuntarily. Its quality and continuity determines to a large extent a city’s distinctiveness and character.
What role must Public Realm continue to play in the ambition of India to create Smart Cities? And what role will new technology play in the livebility of our cities? While there is no doubt that IT-enabled Smart Technology can provide solutions to some of the problems of the busy urbanites, what will it do to the quality of the Public Realm in our cities?
At its core, this discussion raises the question: What type of urban society do we aspire to?
